These sabots, or French wooden clogs, were a souvenir brought home from WWI by Sgt. Fremont Daniels of New London, Connecticut. Daniels served with Battery D, 68th Artillery, Coast Artilery Corps during the war. Donor's mother purchased these [child's] french wooden shoes around 1968 at a yard sale in Niantic, CT on Smith Ave. They are inscribed on the bottom sole with the following: "Sergt. Fremont Daniels, Bat. D 68th Art. CAC, St. Pardon, France. The World's War, Nov. 11, 1918 LeBourne". Inscribed on heel is the phrase: "U.S. First, Last, Always".
